Salt canal or fresh canal changes the job

The City’s fresh and saltwater canal map shows which kind of water sits behind the house. The Waterfront Living Guide (retrieved September 27, 2026) explains that oysters and barnacles attach to docks and seawalls, and that seawalls are not required on freshwater canals, where some lots keep a planted shoreline or rip rap instead.

That same guide says manatees and dolphins can be in the saltwater canals all year and are seen more often from October to March. A crew working over the water should watch for them and stop spraying when one surfaces nearby.

What the City Code and the state say

Cape Coral’s Code of Ordinances, Chapter 10 makes it unlawful to discharge solid waste into city waters or onto an adjacent shore or structure where it may wash in, and it requires an accidental spill of more than one gallon of oil or petroleum product to be reported to the City. A gas pressure washer and its fuel can on a dock fall squarely inside that concern.

The FDEP’s mobile-washing practices state that discharging wash water to surface waters such as canals, rivers or bays is prohibited without an NPDES wastewater permit. In practice, dock cleaning over a canal comes down to plain water, brushes and hand scraping, with scraped growth caught on a tarp rather than swept into the water.

Mangroves and the back ten feet

The guide describes the ten feet above the waterline as a buffer for the waterways, and says mangroves may be maintained up to six feet without a permit while taller ones and any removal need one. A dock cleaner has no business cutting them, and cleaning solution should not be sprayed onto their leaves or roots.

Ask the contractor how they will handle boat lifts, dock lights and electrical boxes, and who is responsible for anything that falls in. For seawall cracks, loose caps or leaning panels, stop and talk to a marine contractor instead.
